Research data management

Research data management (RDM) concerns the careful handling and organisation of data, from its entry to the research cycle, through to the dissemination and archiving of the results (Yu et al., 2017). Several authors agree that a variety of opportunities exist for libraries to extend their influence, services and support for RDM (Cox et al., 2017; Ellen Frederick, 2016; Latham, 2017). The UP Executive approved Figshare as the data repository platform for the university. Although it is not implemented yet, the library decided to act proactively by equipping UP researchers, library staff and other support staff with the necessary skills. A RDM training programme, called the ‘Research data management readiness training toolkit’, was developed and presented. This toolkit consists of two streams. The first is a ‘RDM fundamentals’ workshop that addresses basic RDM issues. The second, ‘RDM essentials’, is a workshop on more specific aspects of RDM, such as metadata administration, uploading content to a data repository and data citation. A third stream of workshops is being planned that will focus on data-intensive activities, such as data analysis, data visualisation and cleaning of data.
